The death of Fred Clifford Morell of Newcastle and Derby Junction occurred on Sunday, October 1, 1978, after a brief illness he was 89.
Born in Newcastle on December 9, 1888, he was the son of the late Walter and Annie (Haines) Morell. On September 30, 1916 he married the former Grace Jones of Woodstock, N.B. She predeceased him in 1970.
After his return from overseas service in the First World War, he was employed for some twenty years with the Minto Coal Company and at the time of his retirement was the Assistant Manager.
Mr. Morell was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion during the past 50 years. He was a charter member and part president of the Minto Branch, and a past president, life member and honourary president of the Miramichi Branch No. 10 at the time of his death. He was a 50-year member and past master of Northumberland Lodge No. 17 Free and Accepted Masons, and past president of the Miramichi Historical Society.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. Robert Martin (Lois) of Chatham; Horace of Ottawa, Ontario, Fred of Newcastle, George of North Bay, Ontario; one brother, James G. of Fredericton; two sisters, Janet L. Morell and Mrs. A. P. Copp (Anne), both of Newcastle; 11 grandchildren.
The body rested at Davidson's Funeral Home, Newcastle. The funeral was held from St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Newcastle, with Rev. John Mills officiating. Rev. D. F. Hoddinott read the Lesson. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion formed a Guard of Honour at the church and graveside and conducted the Legion Memorial Service. Members of the Legion were pallbearers.
Relatives and friends who attended the funeral from a distance were from Ottawa,
North Bay, Montreal, Fredericton, Moncton, Minto and Nackawic.
